The Best Double Sleeping Bags

If you’re backpacking or camping as a couple or family, double sleeping bags have a lot of advantages! The biggest advantage is that you get to cuddle with your partner while you’re sleeping, which also means increased body heat! My husband and I use a double sleeping bag for all of our backpacking trips and there have been several times when I wake up in the middle of the night starting to get a bit chilly and just cuddle up to him for some extra warmth. And don’t worry if you’re concerned about getting too hot – there’s options for addressing that too!

Also surprisingly, one double sleeping bag will end up weighing less than two single sleeping bags. The only real negative to using a 2-person sleeping bag is that they’re pretty bulky and can take up a lot of space, which is a bit of a drag when backpacking (especially since I’m usually the one carrying it whereas Sean gets the tent).

I’ve looked into a bunch of different options for these since I wanted to make sure that we had the best one that would be as light as possible and also take up as little space as possible in my pack.

Best all around
This Stoic Groundwork Double Sleeping Bag is a great well rounded option. When comparing the three biggest features: weight, cost, and warmth – this sleeping bag does well in all categories. There are others below that are better in each of those categories and then worse in others. This is the only one that is a reasonable rate, for a reasonable price, and will still keep you warm just about anywhere.

Best low cost
This Sleepingo double sleeping bag is the one that we use. It’s not the fanciest option and it’s not technically a backpacking sleeping bag, it’s better for camping, but we use it for backpacking anyway. It’s a little heavier and bulkier than some others (the bulkiness is my biggest complaint), but it gets the job done for a fraction of the cost. It’s also not rated for super cold temperatures, which can be another drawback. It will keep you alive down to 32, but you won’t be comfortable unless it’s high 40s/low 50s, so it really depends on where you’re planning on camping or backpacking. It’s worked really well for us for several years!

Teton Sports Tracker Ultralight

Best for cold
The Teton Sports Tracker Ultralight Double Sleeping Bag is the best choice when you need to keep warm in very cold, below freezing temperatures. Because of this it’s a little on the heavier and bulkier side (as most warmer sleeping bags are), but given the extra warmth you’re getting, it’s actually not that bad. Plus the price is really reasonable. Other sleeping bags rated for basically zero degrees are often over $200, but you can pick this one up for close to half of that. In general, if you want a really warm sleeping bag, Teton Sports is a good way to go.

The Exped MegaSleep Duo 25/40 is a great sleeping bag if you’re expecting changes in weather conditions are just aren’t sure if you’re going to be too warm. This 2-person sleeping bag is very versatile and offers you the ability to change up the temperature of your bag just with what side faces up. Flip the bag over based on weather conditions: Dark Blue side up will keep you warm down to 25°F; Light Blue side up keeps you warm down to 40°F. The bag is also light, which makes it good for backpacking. Plus it’s Oeko-Tex certified, which means that all next-to-skin fabrics are treatment free, minimizing your contact with allergens or chemicals. With everything you’re getting, the price point isn’t that bad although it is a little more on the expensive side of some of the sleeping bags we’ve talked about here.

I wouldn’t recommend to take this backpacking as it’s too big and too heavy, but that’s also exactly what makes this a luxury camping sleeping bag – because it’s huge! It’s zipper-less and offers personal sleeves as well as personal foot ventilation flaps so that you can cool or warm yourself without disturbing your partner. It also comes with a sleeping pad sleeve, which keeps your sleeping pad under you all night long – it’s so nice to not have to wake up and readjust just to be comfortable! Which of course also means a higher price tag and is a little smaller in size. This is a luxury backpacking 2-person sleeping bag with lots of room! It’s zipper-less and offers personal sleeves as well as personal foot ventilation flaps so that you can cool or warm yourself without disturbing your partner. Accomplice Quilt

Best for weight
The Enlightened Equipment Accomplice Quilt is so light weight you won’t even notice you’re carrying it! Depending on the size and temperature rating that you chose, this quilt comes out to roughly 1lb per person in weight. That’s pretty darn good for something that can keep you warm when it’s 30 degrees! But you’re gonna end up paying for it since it comes with a pretty hefty price tag. The only thing is that it’s a quilt, not a full sleeping bag. With a quilt, you have to be sure you have the right sleeping pads to go along with it in order to get the full affect of the radiating body heat. So while this technically isn’t a sleeping bag, I still put it in here since it’s a great super lightweight option if you’re ok with not having the full bag.
